♥♥My Evolution in Electronic Literacy♥♥

“Through literacy you can begin to see the universe.” These words were said by Grace Slick, the Jefferson Airplane’s vocalist, and I am completely sure that she was right. But, I think she never imagined that Electronic Literacy could really reach the universe, why? First of all, Electronic Literacy refers to literacy activities supported by computer, internet or other electronic resources. All those means have helped us to simplify almost any kind of work. However, to be a literate person in this century was a difficult way to go for me. This essay focuses on my experiences through the years using electronic literacy, how I became literate and my expectations regarding electronic.

My beginning in Electronic Literacy was not very important for me. I remember that when I was about 7 or 8 years I received my first computer science class. It was really boring and stupid for me. I could not understand very well because I did not seem to be the least a bit interested in any what the teacher explained or in how to manage the computer. For that reason I did not want to practice more. After, when I was in Junior High, I had to learn how to apply some softwares such as “Word”, “Excel” and “Power Point”. But the biggest difficulty was not to learn about those ones, the difficulty was that I did not have a computer! So can you imagine how hard it was? I had to go to a “cybercafé” and do my homework there; it turned kind of troublesome for me. Then, when I was in High School, my father bought a computer and my younger sister became a computing teacher for me.

Nowadays, electronic tools are imperative in almost all the aspects in my life. For example, in my B.A., the teachers utilize different resources from internet that are helpful to teach a second language, for instance; videos, platforms (being “Moodle” the most used), blogs, wikis, e-mails or create interactive sites where we can talk with English native people and in that way develop our skills . Also, the internet makes students’ life easier because we have more access to any information anywhere in the world. Even though, I have to say that the use of internet and computers still sounds quite boring for me. I just have an e-mail account because it was necessary to create it, but I do not spend my time in social net works such as Facebook or My space. But, not all the electronic resources are uninteresting for me; I am actually fascinated with all the music, photos and videos I can find. I spend most of my time watching black and white movies and tutorials on YouTube, and downloading music and images I like.

In my future, I am very sure that Electronic Literacy will be essential for students and teachers. For that reason, I would like to get more knowledge about several electronic resources which help my future students to understand in an easy way the English language. In addition, I would like to study a master degree on-line.As a conclusion, Electronic Literacy helps us to create and discover a word full of any kind of things, information and utilities. It must facilitate our acquisition of knowledge and help us, as a teacher, to develop a new and dynamic ways to teach our students a second language.
